I am furious! My day has been filled with continuous bad news.
First, I called up all the local laptop mechanics and got quotes for them to look at my laptop. The cheapest I could find was $25 plus (if anything was wrong) $60 an hour for labor. I took the bus there (Best Buy at Northgate Mall) and a fellow took a look at it. He got a second opinion from another fellow who said the same thing.. my motherboard is ‘dead’. That is the worst thing that can happen to a computer and it happened to mine. = (
I tried looking on the bright side, but it is more dim than anything else. Even if I get a used replacement part off of e-bay (itself a miraculous feat) I would likely pay $100-200 for it, plus labor of them putting it in, $60-90. Worst case scenario I’d be paying $300 to get it working again. My alternative, which I’d been thinking about in case it was stolen here at college, is to buy a new computer which would only cost me twice that plus a little more.. Maximum $800.
This desktop would include the ability to make DVDs and cds superfast. All this at computing power speeds five times that of my laptop. Plus storage space of 80-120 gb(not 6 like my laptop but)!! That is pretty exciting I think. There are the drawbacks however:
- The $800 price does not include a printer (not a huge deal for me) or a monitor (very important). There is a monitor that I could use back in Vancouver, but I couldn't get it until November/Holidays anyway. - I could just buy my grandpa's computer off of him, but still I will be waiting until the Holidays to use it. - It is $800 man! I really don't have tons of money to simply burn off! Man, it would be cool and all, but sheesh! - My lovely 2104 house only provides .. dial-up.. *sigh* this means SLOW download performance on a fast machine.. such a pity. I couldn't take it to the library you know, desktops aren't protable. - I will miss my 'go anywhere' dvd player on my laptop.. the sole reason for me buying that $100 extra battery. - Even if I did buy the computer I wanted, there is no reason to buy it here in Seattle. The sales tax would easily add up to $80, plus Seattle seems to have extra taxes besides the state tax. Portland it is where I’ll get the stuff, but still I’ll have to wait until the holidays.
See how much this all sucks..
Then, I went to the Housing Office to find out if I'm all square with everything. I'm not. I have to take that money I got and pay my housing bill with it. I have been using some of it for things like food and such..
I found out that next quarter I'll be able to apply for the ala card exemption. Since I am in 2104, far away from any campus food places, I don't have to be 'stuck' with the non-refundable food program here. Regardless, I still have to spend over $300 or lose it to UW for this quarter. The remaining money will be returned to me.. in Spring. Spring! *sigh*
I finally got an answer about the lack of Ethernet at the 2104 and the timeline for the new installation. Next year. I was so pumped to get out of the house and on to fast internet.. until I realized that if I leave the house, I'll be forced to pay for the full food program.
I'll have to stay at the house. I still need money for food though. I don't have to worry about it too much as I still have $150 or so to burn before my plan is in full effect.
I should reflect on how good I felt the other day when at the Market. This is my dream!! Buying fresh foods and making dinner, and living in Seattle! Taking acting classes, swing dancing! Awesome. I should look for a job though. Buying food costs money that I don’t have. Man.. the college life. Of course, the cork falling into that oil and all over my food the other night wasn't fun.
I have my Improv group meeting tonight, which I'm not really looking forward to. I love the scene building games and we will do none of that! Bummer. I've considered making up another group to do scenework stuff, but I feel that I would just end up teaching another workshop.. just like with Swing Kids.
Man, I've got to figure this out now. I don't have a laptop to play dance clips on anymore. AGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
I hate when things turn bad.
